Clinical Trial Centre

Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp

In the Clinical Trial Center (CTC), the Antwerp Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) is testing new vaccines, medications and treatments against infectious diseases before they can be put into use.

New medicines and vaccines cannot be used just like that. Thorough testing is needed first to determine if the treatments are safe and effective.

New medicines and vaccines can only be used on a large scale after going through various test phases. ITM also carries out such studies. The brand new CTC ensures that these investigations can take place under the most optimal conditions.

The research of the Institute of Tropical Medicine aims to improve health in low- and middle-income countries through research into tropical diseases, but due to climate change and globalization, many “tropical” diseases are now also present in our regions and have research is also useful for Belgium.

Marc-Alain Widdowson, director of ITM: “The aim of our institute is to use science to improve health in low- and middle-income countries, and thus contribute to global health. In our new center we conduct research to vaccines and medicines against infectious diseases here in Belgium, but with relevance for low- and middle-income countries”.
